Hauwa Ojeifo publicly identifies as a person who lives with a mental health condition and psychosocial disability. Popularly tagged as the voice and face of mental health in Nigeria, she is the Executive Director at She Writes Woman (SWW); an award-winning movement that gives mental health a voice in Nigeria. She is the creator of the Facebook Accelerator backed Safe Place Nigeria – a virtual community for mental health-conscious Nigerians. As a sexual violence survivor, she is giving mental health and sexual violence a voice; taking back the existing misinformed narrative and normalising mental health conversations in Nigeria.
Hauwa is a Certified Integrative Mental Health coach and a recipient of the prestigious Queen’s Young Leaders award. She is a One Young World Ambassador and an AstraZeneca Young Health Programme scholar. Hauwa is the only African to bag the MTV Europe Music Generation Change Award and was also honoured as an Obama Africa Leader 2019. She was shortlisted for the Women Deliver class of 2020 and is a Mandela Washington Fellow 2020.
Her vision is to empower and equip persons who live with mental health conditions or psychosocial disabilities to advocate for their own rights, tell their own stories and co-create their solutions. She hopes that collectively, people with lived experience can champion inclusive mental health policies and solutions in Nigeria.
