GAIL SMITH

Gail Smith is a feminist writer and journalist from Johannesburg, South Africa. Smith, whose journalism and essays have covered the nexus of race, gender, power and representation, was awarded the Nieman Fellowship for journalism at Harvard in 2006, and has also been a resident of the prestigious Civitella Ranieri Fellowship in Umbria, Italy. She holds an MA in Gender Studies and Education, and achieved cum laude for her thesis, a feminist analysis Winnie Mandela, awarded by University College London in 1995. Smith is the former spokesperson for the South African Human Rights Commission, is currently a spokesperson for the Soul City Institute for Social Justice, an intersectional feminist institute looking to dismantle patriarchy in all its guises. Gail lives, writes and causes feminist mayhem in Johannesburg, an old mining town she loves with depth and passion.
