Birthday Elegy<\/strong><\/p>\n

(For the families of ET 302 victims)<\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

1.
\n& what poem shall we give
\nto comfort the girl by the windowsill
\nawaiting her father\u2019s impossible return?<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

What poem shall reinstate the
\ntentative smile of a husband
\nthat becomes his final?<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

When farewells acquire permanence,
\npoets must shut up
\n& commit to silence.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

2.
\nBut silence is a treacherous thing,
\ndon’t let words fail.
\nSilence is duplicitous & complicit,
\nSilence is too fatal an act
\nfor a poet to commit.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

3.
\nA plane stumbled & fell at Bishoftu
\non my 33rd birthday.
\nBodies, blood and blurry memories
\nredacted the felicity of vain numbering
\n& here I lie, wounded by grief,
\ncontemplating my humanity in silence.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

4.
\nEmmanuel says 33 is good age to go
\nor dare to dream.<\/p>\n

I acquiesce,
\nbut I ask if dying is for the dead
\nas it is for the living.<\/p>\n

Then I dare to dream\u2026<\/p>\n
