The festival theme responds differently by showing that black bodies are intellectual. In doing it among other black bodies, it\u2019s less to try to explain itself to whiteness and more to empower each other<em>. <\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Which African or Diasporan novel do you think best explores the Black Body?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Sulaiman Addonia\u2019s<em> Silence is My Mother Tongue.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>You are asked to write an African <em>femme fatale<\/em> as an alien. What physical attributes would she have?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>She\u2019ll be telekinetic and a mind-reader. Though I am not sure I would, since Africans are already alienated enough.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>What book would you give to a dark-skinned young woman who has expressed an intent to buy bleaching cream?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Angela Makholwa\u2019s <em>The Blessed Girl.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Does the African writer have a specific role to play in the current world order?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The job of a writer, African or otherwise, is to write and write the best work they can. If their best work educates, critiques or pricks the reader\u2019s conscience, then that\u2019s great; but art should never take a back seat to some supposed bigger messaging.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Which person do you think best represents an African perspective in the ongoing discourse on gender?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Academic and poet Danai Mupotsa.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>You\u2019re giving a talk at a symposium on mental health, which African novels will you reference?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Novuyo Rosa Tshuma\u2019s <em>House of Stone<\/em>, Tsitsi Dangarembga\u2019s <em>This Mournable Body<\/em>, Akwaeke Emezi\u2019s <em>Freshwater<\/em>, <em>Old Drift<\/em> by Namwali Serpell, and finally, <em>The Quiet Violence of Dreams<\/em> by K.
