{"id":5939,"date":"2018-11-07T09:21:15","date_gmt":"2018-11-07T09:21:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/akefestival.org\/archive\/?p=5939"},"modified":"2020-07-11T15:15:40","modified_gmt":"2020-07-11T15:15:40","slug":"book-chat-of-women-and-frogs-by-bisi-adjapon-by-tireni-odubiyi","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/akefestival.org\/archive\/book-chat-of-women-and-frogs-by-bisi-adjapon-by-tireni-odubiyi\/","title":{"rendered":"Book Chat: Of Women and Frogs by Bisi Adjapon by Tireni Odubiyi"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFor an African woman, this story is steeped in sex and sexuality,\u201d Toni Kan says hosting the book chat on Bisi Adjapon\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of Women and Frogs<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which describes the sexual journey that her young Nigerian-Ghanaian protagonist, Esi faces.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-6048\" src=\"https:\/\/akefestival.org\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/DSC_7447-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/>Adjapon comments on how some of the book was inspired by her life\u2014being the 10th born in a family of 12 and growing up neglected as a result. \u201cI was very raw, I didn\u2019t know what was wrong and what was right. I did whatever was natural.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is a scene in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of Women and Frogs <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">where a curious Esi pinches another character\u2019s bottom. Adjapon relays that this scene was inspired by a similar event in that occurred in her life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-6049 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/akefestival.org\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/DSC_7461-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/>The book also features other autobiographical elements such as Esi attending the same all-girls school that Adjapon attended when she was younger, Wesley Girls\u2019 Senior High School. One of the most poignant moments on the panel was Adjapon explaining her decision to honour the principal of her former school by using her name in the novel. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adjapon describes the book as feminist. The father\u2019s focus in the novel was on getting all his female children married. This is another feature of the book inspired by events in Adjapon\u2019s life. \u201cA woman\u2019s glory is her husband,\u201d Bisi Adjapon says her father used to say. In other words, he believed a woman with no husband was a woman with no glory.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-6050\" src=\"https:\/\/akefestival.org\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/DSC_7466-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/>Overall, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of Women and Frogs<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> encourages readers to reflect on their own sexuality in the absence of shame.
