{"id":3836,"date":"2018-10-13T22:55:53","date_gmt":"2018-10-13T22:55:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/akefestival.org\/archive\/akefestival\/?p=3836"},"modified":"2018-10-13T22:55:53","modified_gmt":"2018-10-13T22:55:53","slug":"ake-festival-in-2016","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/akefestival.org\/archive\/ake-festival-in-2016\/","title":{"rendered":"AKE FESTIVAL IN 2016"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><strong>NGUGI WA THIONG&#8217;O TO HEADLINE\u00a0<\/strong><strong>AKE FESTIVAL IN 2016<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Abeokuta, Ogun State will stand still once again as it hosts an outstanding roster of writers, thinkers, artists, filmmakers, musicians, book lovers and art enthusiasts at the fourth edition of the\u00a0<strong>Ake Arts and Book Festival<\/strong>2016.<\/p>\n<p>We are pleased to announce that our dates for this year are<strong>\u00a015-19 November\u00a0<\/strong>and the festival will take place\u00a0<strong>at Arts and Culture Centre, Kuto, Abeokuta.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s edition is themed\u00a0<strong>\u201cBeneath this Skin\u2019\u2019 and\u00a0<\/strong>we are delighted to have Distinguished Professor, renowned writer, and literary icon\u00a0<strong>Ng\u0169g\u0129 wa Thiong\u2019o<\/strong>\u00a0as our headliner at the 2016 edition of Ake Arts and Book Festival. He will sit in conversation with\u00a0<strong>Okey Ndibe\u00a0<\/strong>about his life and works. He will also be talking about his latest book\u00a0<em><strong>Birth of a Dream Weaver.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>HIGHLIGHTS OF THE FESTIVAL<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The festival will also host\u00a0<strong>9 book chats<\/strong>\u00a0which will feature 18 authors like\u00a0<strong>Alain Mabanckou,\u00a0Helon Habila, Laila Lalami, Petina Gappah, Teju Cole, Panashe Chigumadzi, Tendai Huchu, Chinelo Okparanta, Noviolet Bulawayo, Jowhor Ile, Sarah Ladipo Manyika, Odafe Atogun, Tade Thompson, Toni Kan and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/akefestival.org\/archive\/index.php\/the-festival\/ake-festival-2016-guests\" rel=\"alternate\">many more.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In our\u00a0<strong>12 stimulating panel discussions where we will engage both new voices and established ones,\u00a0we\u00a0will focus on\u00a0identities, race, gender, mental health in fiction, the rise and fall of African economies.\u00a0<\/strong>We will also\u00a0explore exciting genres such as<strong>\u00a0erotica<\/strong>,<strong>\u00a0horror fiction<\/strong>, and\u00a0<strong>prison stories.<\/strong>\u00a0At the\u00a0<strong>2<\/strong>\u00a0art exhibitions, we will see the works of\u00a0<strong>Laolu Senbanjo<\/strong>\u00a0whose \u201cSacred Art of the Ori\u201d featured on\u00a0<strong>Beyonce\u2019s<\/strong>\u00a0latest album\u00a0<strong>Lemonade;<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>Fatima Abubakar<\/strong>\u00a0who captures the lives of the people of Borno State in a stunning series of photographs. An acoustic music concert with\u00a0<strong>Brymo<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Falana<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Adunni<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Nefertiti<\/strong>\u00a0will also entertain the audience at the Festival.<\/p>\n<p>Our\u00a0<strong>Festival Film is\u00a0<\/strong>the documentary\u00a0<strong>Hissene Habre: A Chadian Tragedy,\u00a0<\/strong>an account of the horror inflicted on the Chadian people during Hissen Habre\u2019s rule. We will also premier our F<strong>estival of Short Films\u00a0<\/strong>to celebrate this form of visual storytelling and the people who are fuelling its rapid growth in Nigeria. The short films to be screened are: A\u00a0<strong>Mother\u2019s Journey<\/strong>\u00a0by\u00a0<strong>Sade Adeniran<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>No Good Turn<\/strong>\u00a0by\u00a0<strong>Udoka Oyeka<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Salt<\/strong>\u00a0by\u00a0<strong>Umar Turaki.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>WORKSHOPS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Fiction Writing<\/strong>\u00a0with \u00a0<strong>Noviolet Bulawayo<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Helon Habila<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Sarah Ladipo Manyika &#8211; 15 November 2016<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Script-Writing<\/strong>\u00a0with\u00a0<strong>Inya Lawal<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Victoria Thomas<\/strong>\u00a0of\u00a0<strong>The<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Story Republic &#8211;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Graphic Short Stories\u00a0<\/strong>with\u00a0<strong>Sebastian Loerscher &#8211; 14, 15 November 216<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>POETRY<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>At the much-anticipated\u00a0<strong>Palm Wine and Poetry<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Evening,\u00a0<\/strong>attendees will enjoy outstanding performances by, poets like\u00a0<strong>Titilope Sonuga, Lebo Mashile, Ogaga Ifowodo, Micheal Kelleher and Dike Chukwumerije,\u00a0<\/strong>while sipping on a calabash of deliciously fresh palm wine.<\/p>\n<p><strong>DRAMA AT AKE FESTIVAL<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Ake Arts and Book Festival is one of the most exciting cultural events\u00a0on the continent.
